Ohana Health & Wellness Clinics

heatlh_man_child01.jpgIntroduction

Ohana Health and Wellness Clinics were started in October 2010 with a longitudinal focus in mind. Specifically we decided to focus on oral hygiene as well as hand hygiene to underprivileged children across Kenya.

Regardless of language or culture, all humans share the basic need for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Camp Ohana Foundation encompasses several values that we feel are important, with wellbeing being one of them.

Our goal is to raise funds in order for the Health and Wellness Clinics to be conducted every three months for Kenyan Children and Youth.

Project Timeline

We hope for this to be a lifelong project. When the Camp Ohana Campus is open, the Health and Wellness Clinics will be operated on campus as well.

Project Cost

The project cost is USD $350 every three months.

Our fundraising efforts will ensure the Health and Wellness Clinics are conducted every three months for underprivileged and orphaned Kenyan youth in western Kenya. It is our goal to raise $120 USD per month in order to continue these dental and hand hygiene clinics in Kenya.

Through our fundraising efforts, the funds would supply a new toothbrush and toothpaste to 300+ children every three months. In addition, the funds will also be used for the purchase of soap to be distributed to the children for hand washing.

Through your donations and further fundraising efforts we hope to raise enough money to complete these Health and Wellness Clinics every three months.

Project Accountability

100% of gifts, donations and proceeds will go towards the Health and Wellness Clinic Project.  The Camp Ohana Foundation will provide updates after each clinic to all individuals and organizations that contribute towards this project.

heatlh_man_child01.jpgProject Impact

An estimated 300+ underprivileged and orphaned Kenyan youth in western Kenya benefit from the Health and Wellness Clinics through the continued reinforcement of teaching every three months.  In addition, with the help of your donations, the children will be provided with the basic necessities in order to carry out oral and hand hygiene.

Through our recent teaching process we learned that many children in Kenya have never seen a ‘real’ toothbrush or toothpaste before. Most children used a shredded twig and ash with a pinch of salt to brush their teeth. Some children do not ever or have never even performed oral hygiene. A toothbrush is the foundation of good oral health. When it comes to oral health, it isn’t just about a dazzling smile and fresh breath. Your toothbrush is an important key to good overall health. How and when you use it, and how often you change it really does matter. Adults and children should replace their toothbrush every three months because they become worn out and are not as effective as they once were.

heatlh_woman_child02.jpgDuring our recent adventure we also taught the children about the importance of hand hygiene. At most meals you will find Kenyan's eating with their hands. Children may not always listen when you tell them to wash their hands before eating, but it's a message worth repeating. Hand washing is by far the best way to prevent germs from spreading and to keep children from getting sick. The awesome thing about hand washing is all you need is soap and water!! By providing the children with soap and simple songs and lesson plans about when, why, and for how long to wash your hands the children had what they needed to complete this basic task that is key in stopping the spread of germs. Hand washing is the single most cost effective method to avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of illness.

Project Sustainability

Camp Ohana will train local members of the community who will work directly with the local community and volunteers and who will supervise and run the Health and Wellness Clinics every three months.

The involvement of Camp Ohana and local volunteers throughout the life of this project will assure that the education materials and needed supplies (tooth brushes, toothpaste, and hand soap) will be readily available so that the Health and Wellness Clinics can be run every three months.
